According to TED.com : “Physics doesn’t just happen in a fancy lab — it happens when you push a piece of buttered toast off the table or drop a couple of raisins in a fizzy drink or watch a coffee spill dry. Become a more interesting dinner guest as physicist Helen Czerski presents various concepts in physics you can become familiar with using everyday things found in your kitchen.”
“This talk was presented to a local audience at TEDxManchester, an independent event. TED editors featured it among our selections on the home page.”
“Dr. Helen Czerski has studied bubbles at sea and in the lab, has presented many highly-regarded BBC science documentaries and has told the stories of science (and especially of physics) on stage and in print.
Czerski’s academic home is the department of mechanical engineering at University College London in the UK. Her first book, Storm in a Teacup, was published in 2016 (2017 in the US) and shows how the biggest ideas in physics come to life in the world around us — and how the most mundane quirks of the everyday world open the door to the physics that every citizen needs to know.”
Enjoy!

For those of you not familiar with TED Talks here is a brief summery from www.ted.com: “TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences — the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK each summer — TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and Open TV Project, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize”

Every year I showcase the mandalas created in the previous 12 months by creating a mandala calendar from them. This year I had 2 sets of mandalas, the Mandalas from the Heart of Freedom and the Mandalas from the Heart of Change, “come through” me and are, to me, even more amazing than any I’ve yet been privileged to bring into form. I know I say that every year, but they just keep getting better and better. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy creating them. All mandala calendars from previous years are also available in 2018 versions.

According to TED.com : “Necessity is the mother of invention, right? Well, not always. Steven Johnson shows us how some of the most transformative ideas and technologies, like the computer, didn’t emerge out of necessity at all but instead from the strange delight of play. Share this captivating, illustrated exploration of the history of invention. Turns out, you’ll find the future wherever people are having the most fun.”
“Steven Johnson is a leading light of today’s interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to innovation. His writings have influenced everything from cutting-edge ideas in urban planning to the battle against 21st-century terrorism. Johnson was chosen by Prospectmagazine as one of the top ten brains of the digital future, and The Wall Street Journalcalls him “one of the most persuasive advocates for the role of collaboration in innovation.””
“Johnson’s work on the history of innovation inspired the Emmy-nominated six-part series on PBS, “How We Got To Now with Steven Johnson,” which aired in the fall of 2014. The book version of How We Got To Now was a finalist for the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. His new book, Wonderland: How Play Made the Modern World, revolves around the creative power of play and delight: ideas and innovations that set into motion many momentous changes in science, technology, politics and society. ”
