Mandala Monday – Mandalas from the Heart of Freedom, Part 1

Freedom is the theme and name that this new set of mandalas have given me as their name. Throughout 2016 I created mandala after mandala. Periodically I would go through them and see which ones wanted to stay in a collection permanently and discard the others. I never know what I am going to create when I sit down to do one, and while they always seem to want to be published as a set, I never know what the name or theme is until they are all done. In early 2017 I began the final work of printing each image to see which would work well in print (what looks good on a computer screen doesn’t always translate to print) and see which images really wanted to be out in the world as a set.

There are now 30 images, whose name, Mandalas from the Heart of Freedom, popped into my head as I was finalizing them. You can see them all on my gallery page, https://nwcreations.com/galleries/mandalas/, or just view and savor a few as I release them on this blog over the coming weeks.

I hope you find inspiration and joy in interacting with them.

Mandala Monday – Flower Mandala II Mehndi design by Om Henna Om

Our tutorial today is on how to create a Flower Mandala Mehndi design by Om Henna Om. As we learned from a previous post (Mandala Monday – Simple Mandala Mehndi Design by Om Henna Om):

According to Wikipedia:Mehndi or “Mehendi” or henna is a paste that is created from the powdered leaf of the henna plant and is made into designs for men and women. Mehndi is derived from the Sanskrit word mendhikā. The use of mehndi and turmeric is described in the earliest Hindu Vedic ritual books. It was originally used for only women’s palms and sometimes for men, but as time progressed, it was more common for men to wear it.

Mehndi in Indian tradition is typically applied during special Hindu weddings and Hindu festivals like Karva Chauth, Vat Purnima, Diwali, Bhai Dooj and Teej. In Hindu festivals, many women have Henna applied to their hands and feet and sometimes on the back of their shoulders too, as men have it applied on their arms, legs, back, and chest. For women, it is usually drawn on the palm, back of the hand and on feet, where the design will be clearest due to contrast with the lighter skin on these surfaces, which naturally contain less of the pigment melanin.”
