TED Talk Thursday – Kaki King: A musical escape into a world of light and color

According to TED.com: “A genre unto herself, Kaki King fuses the ancient tradition of working with one’s hands with digital technology, projection-mapping imagery onto her guitar in her groundbreaking multimedia work “The Neck Is a Bridge to the Body.” Using her guitar’s neck like a keyboard, she plays an intricate melody as she takes the audience on a musical journey of light and sound. She calls it “guitar as paintbrush.”

“Kaki King’s percussive technique (guitar geeks compare it to Preston Reed’s; everyone else compares it to Eddie Van Halen’s) drives her songs forward, while layers of overdubs and her own soft vocals create a shimmering cloud of sound.”

“King’s work on the soundtrack for 2007’s Into the Wild was nominated for a Golden Globe, along with contributors Michael Brook and Eddie Vedder. Her groundbreaking multimedia work The Neck Is a Bridge to the Body uses projection mapping to present the guitar as an ontological tabula rasa in a creation myth unlike any other.”

Enjoy!

For those of you not familiar with TED Talks here is a brief summery from www.ted.com: “TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences — the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK each summer — TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and Open TV Project, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize”

I keep searching for more creative means that people use to make mandalas and this week I found Cindy Angiel from Rainbow Elephant. She has a great mandala video for those of you who like rubber stamping. You’ll find step by step instructions for rubber stamping mandalas on her video below.

You can also find the Circular Grid Drawing Guides that she uses at: http://Crafthappy.Art-shopette.com.

Mandala Monday – Making a Mandalaish Oracle Set by The Truth in Story

Since painting mandalas on stones seems to be so popular now, I was delighted to fine this video which takes this a step further, creating an oracle set out of mandalas painted on stones. This step by step video will get you started if you’d like to try this (and is fun to watch even if your not inclined to DYI painting projects.) Thank you to Kelly and The Truth in Story for this creative idea.
