According to TED.com: “The ten women in this chorus have all been sentenced to life in prison. They share a moving song about their experiences — one that reveals their hopes, regrets and fears. “I’m not an angel,” sings one, “but I’m not the devil.” Filmed at an independent TEDx event inside Muncy State Prison, it’s a rare and poignant look inside the world of people imprisoned with no hope of parole.”
“The Lady Lifers are a chorus of women serving life sentences in Muncy State Prison in Pennsylvania. While they are often known by their inmate numbers, they also have names: Brenda Watkins, Dannielle Hadley, Debra Lee Brown, Theresa Battles, Diane Metzger, Thelma Nichols, Joann Butler, Lena Brown, Trina Garnett, Naomi Blount. Together, they sing about their hopes and fears, including the very real possibility that they may die alone in prison.”
The words to their song “This is Not My Home” by Howard Woodring. Music by Naomi Blount. Very moving.
For those of you not familiar with TED Talks here is a brief summery from www.ted.com: “TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences — the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK each summer — TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and Open TV Project, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize”

According to TEDTalks: “Artist Nathalie Miebach takes weather data from massive storms and turns it into complex sculptures that embody the forces of nature and time. These sculptures then become musical scores for a string quartet to play.”
“Nathalie Miebach’s work focuses on the intersection of art and science and the visual articulation of scientific observations. Her woven sculptures interpret scientific data related to astronomy, ecology and meteorology in three-dimensional space. Her pieces simulatneously function as works of art, aural embodiments of data (musical compositions) and instruments that illustrate environmental change. ”
“By utilizing artistic processes and everyday materials, Miebach questions and expands the boundaries of traditional science data visualization — and provokes expectations of what visual vocabulary is considered to be in the domain of science and art. Miebach is a TEDGlobal 2011 Fellow.”
Enjoy this short but fascinating video.

by atmara | Feb 2, 2015 | Art, Choral Music, Mandala Coloring, Mandala Monday, Mandalas, Music, Video
Today I have both a mandala for you to color as well as an uplifting arrangement of “Let The River Run” by Carly Simon (arrangement by Craig Hella Johnson) and sung by the world renown choir, Conspirare.
First the mandala:
Download a larger version to color at: http://mandalasparapintar.blogspot.com/2015/01/mandalas-para-pintar.html, then listen to this fabulous choir while you are coloring.
According to Youtube this is: “Conspirare performance of “Let the River Run” by Carly Simon (arrangement by Craig Hella Johnson) from the PBS special “A Company of Voices: Conspirare in Concert,” a production of KLRU-TV in association with Conspirare. Conductor, Craig Hella Johnson. Recorded live at Dell Hall, Long Center for the Performing Arts, Austin, TX, October 2008. Available on DVD and Grammy®-nominated CD (Harmonia Mundi) at http://www.conspirare.org.”
I have the great good fortune to know Craig Hella Johnson and, as someone trained as a choral director, can honestly say he is a genius at arranging choral music and a world class choral conductor. I hope you explore more of Conspirare’s music on Youtube at: https://www.youtube.com/user/ConspirareChoir/feed?spfreload=10.
To see Craig’s TEDxAustin talk, which I highly recommend, see my post: https://nwcreations.com/ted-talk-thursday-tedxaustin-craig-hella-johnson/
Enjoy!
