Mandala Monday – Drawing Mandalas: Dearing Wang’s 12 Star Spiral Rose Tutorial

Today I have another tutorial in drawing mandalas for you. Below you will find Dearing Wang’s 12 Star Spiral Rose Mandala Tutorial. According to Dearing Wang: “The geometric diagram underlying the 12 pointed star Mandala that spirals towards the Mysterious center is a way to reflect and meditate on ones own life as being part of the Universe. A bigger reality. It is a really fun way to explore the world of abstract mathematical forms. I really like the beauty of this pattern. ”

TED Talk Thursday – Ron Eglash: The fractals at the heart of African designs

According to TEDTalks: “‘I am a mathematician, and I would like to stand on your roof.’ That is how Ron Eglash greeted many African families he met while researching the fractal patterns he’d noticed in villages across the continent.”

“”Ethno-mathematician” Ron Eglash is the author of African Fractals, a book that examines the fractal patterns underpinning architecture, art and design in many parts of Africa. By looking at aerial-view photos — and then following up with detailed research on the ground — Eglash discovered that many African villages are purposely laid out to form perfect fractals, with self-similar shapes repeated in the rooms of the house, and the house itself, and the clusters of houses in the village, in mathematically predictable patterns. ”

Enjoy this interesting talk.

For those of you not familiar with TED Talks here is a brief summery from www.ted.com: “TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences — the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK each summer — TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and Open TV Project, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize”

Mandala Monday – Drawing Mandalas: Dearing Wang’s Arq Mandala Pattern

I recently discovered a number of videos on YouTube showing how to draw specific mandalas and thought it would be fun to share some of them with you. These short videos by Dearing Wang show you how to draw the Arq Mandala pattern.

And just for the fun of it a time lapse video of the Arq mandala drawing process:

According to Dearing Wang: “This pattern has an interesting underlying symmetry. It is defined by an overall 4 Fold symmetry formed by the 4 outer circles. Yet the centre has a 6 Fold symmetry. The big challenge was to connect the Inner with the Outer Form which was different in symmetry depending on the axis.”

If you’d like to download a copy of the Arq Mandala to color rather than attempt to draw it yourself, you can do so at: http://dearingdraws.shopdare.com/downloads/the-arq-mandala-colorsheet/
