Mandala Monday – Mandala Stones: How to Paint Mandalas on Stones Part 3

Painting mandala stones has been the topic of 2 other posts (https://nwcreations.com/mandala-monday-mandala-stones-paint-mandalas-stones/ and https://nwcreations.com/mandala-monday-mandala-stones-how-to-paint-mandalas-on-stones-part-2/). They have been so popular that I’m creating a Mandala Stones: How to Paint Mandalas on Stones Part 3.

The first video today is by alex ride. Enjoy!

The second video is by Elspeth McLean. We saw one of her videos in https://nwcreations.com/mandala-monday-mandala-stones-paint-mandalas-stones and today we have a more recent video giving us a behind the scenes look at her work.

Behind the scenes with Elspeth McLean-
the process and journey of creating Mandala Stones

Here is what Elspeth McLean says about this video: “I am so happy you have found your way to this little film. After images of my Mandala Stones went viral in 2015 I wanted to find a way to share the true story of the these treasures and my process of creating them.”

“With the help of my friend Blair from SoulFam Productions on film and pretty background music by my husband Adam Dobres join me on this little adventure.”

“We created this film in my first ever studio. For the last 10 years I’ve been painting in little spaces set aside in lounge rooms, my bedroom and even once in the kitchen. Although we moved from this house not after this film was made I am so happy to share this sacred space that was and will always be so special to me.”

“For more of my artwork and links to all my social media-

I also have a FAQ on my website that goes into detail about my technique and other helpful information. “

Enjoy painting stones!

TED Talk Thursday – Greg Asner: Ecology from the air

According to TED.com: “What are our forests really made of? From the air, ecologist Greg Asner uses a spectrometer and high-powered lasers to map nature in meticulous kaleidoscopic 3D detail — what he calls “a very high-tech accounting system” of carbon. In this fascinating talk, Asner gives a clear message: To save our ecosystems, we need more data, gathered in new ways.”

“The remote sensing techniques developed by Greg Asner and his team are viewed as among the most advanced in the world for exploring Earth’s changing ecosystems in unprecedented detail and richness. Using airborne and satellite technologies such as laser scanning and hyperspectral imaging, combined with field work and computer modeling, Asner measures and qualifies humans’ impact on regions from the American Southwest to the Brazilian Amazon.”

“We’re able to see, if you will, the forest and the trees at the same time,” Asner says. “We’re able to now understand an image, map and measure huge expanses of the environment while maintaining the detail. Not just the spatial resolution, but the biological resolution—the actual organisms that live in these places.” For Asner, who is on the faculty at the Carnegie Institution and Stanford and leads the Carnegie Airborne Observatory project, this is science with a mission: to influence climate change treaties and save the forests he studies.”

Enjoy.

For those of you not familiar with TED Talks here is a brief summery from www.ted.com: “TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences — the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK each summer — TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and Open TV Project, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize”

TED Talk Thursday -Two young scientists break down plastics with bacteria

According to TED.com: “Once it’s created, plastic (almost) never dies. While in 12th grade Miranda Wang and Jeanny Yao went in search of a new bacteria to biodegrade plastic — specifically by breaking down phthalates, a harmful plasticizer. They found an answer surprisingly close to home.”

“Miranda Wang and Jeanny Yao have identified a new bacteria that breaks down nasty compounds called phthalates, common to flexible plastics and linked to health problems. And they’re still teenagers.”

“After a visit to a plastic-filled waste transfer station last year, students Miranda Wang and Jeanny Yao learned that much of the plastic in trash may not degrade for 5,000 years. Synthesized into plastics are phthalates, compounds that make shower curtain liners, food wraps and other products bendable but may also adversely impact human reproductive development and health.  As plastics slowly break down, these phthalates would leach into the surrounding environment.”

So, the two young scientists tackled the problem and ultimately discovered strains of bacteria that have the potential to naturally degrade phthalates. Their work earned a regional first place in British Columbia for the 2012 Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge Canada, as well as a special award for the most commercial potential at the contest’s finals.”

Enjoy this inspiring talk.
